How Do I First Make Contact With Athletes?

In this Mental Coach Mentoring video, Dr. Cohn answers the question: “What’s the best way to make contact with athletes?” Making contact with athletes is a big challenge for newly certified MGCPs or mental game experts coming out of graduate school. Developing relationships is critical to helping your find work. Sometime you have to look within your own circles.

I am aprreciate to you for sharing your experiences and konwledges with us. I am a graduate student from china, now I am reading in grade one. Last year, I have an opportunity to practice in one team, and what I experienced and confused is like the video where you said. I want to say thanks to you. You konw,English is the second language to me, so sometimes I can’t understand what you said. If you can give us the message online in written, I think it will be better. And could I ask for you some information about mental trainning for studying? Thank you!

I could not agree more with what Patrick has to say here. This concept of ‘teachable moment’ is vital and is one I too have learned, perhaps the hard way!

As a mental game coach, you have to be prepared to turn work down when you feel you won’t be most effective.

To find the ‘teachable moment’, I find the athlete must be in position of ‘performance pain’ that means they have a strong will to do something different.
